Project 2: Graphic Design History Poster – Info / Specs

Graphic Design History Poster

Develop concepts to make a period of graphic design history easier to comprehend and remember.

Design a poster which summarizes a randomly assigned chapter from Meggs' History of Graphic Design. Read assigned chapter and take notes summarizing the text and answering study guide questions. Use the study guide questions to write a brief introductory overview to your chapter (1 to 3 sentences) which you'll use on the poster. Download the study guide here.

Scan all images and retype captions and place into a grid system based on historic time sequence while incorporating stylistic devices. Index captions to images. All images and captions should be used. UPDATE: USE 40 - 45 IMAGES, if you do not have enough in your chapter you'll need to do some additional research.

Print production: InDesign, full-color, 20" x 32" vertical format.

PROJECT 1 SPECS / INFO

Project 1: Visual Definitions (2 grayscale compositions) [2 weeks]

Two graphic design words will be randomly assigned to each student. Definitions will be provided in the pdf glossary here. Develop concepts for type dominant visual definitions.

Consider the following during concept phase:
What principles of two-dimensional design will you use in order to make this composition visually interesting, appropriate, and memorable?
What will you emphasize?
Which Gestalt principles can be used?
Will you use a modular grid system or free-from placement?

Production phase:
Begin with research and concept development. Next work on small size roughs for review. Once your concept is approved begin a tight drawing at full-scale. Once the full-scale sketch is approved, you may begin to work on the computer. Use Adobe Illustrator and/or InDesign to build your compositions on the computer. Format: 10” x 10”, greyscale.
